Ireland's first airport-based COVID-19 testing centres open at Cork and Shannon

Ireland's first airport-based COVID-19 testing centres in Cork and Shannon airports have opened.

David Rock, Chief Executive of RocDoc who are running the two centres, has said tests will cost between €129 and €149.

However, if anyone requires their results urgently i.e. within a few hours, the testing facilities can do that at a price of €199.

Both testing facilities are located by the airport car parks and will provide the pre-departure tests for passengers flying out of the airports in accordance with the EU’s new air travel regime.

Both facilities will also provide private testing services to the public.

Speaking with Morning Ireland, Mr Rock said: "If you are flying out of Ireland, it's a 72-hour window that's required because it gives us time to get your results back for your flight - if you're going for a PCR test. It's not just for travelling outside of the country, there's also travel inside of the country. If you need to go and see a sick relative or loved one - and a test is required - we can provide that service too.

The testing centres are fully operational and will offer HPRA-approved (Health Products Regulatory Authority) CE marked tests using PCR and LAMP technology.

For those flying out of Ireland via Cork and Shannon airport, if they want to avail of a COVID test at these facilities, they need to contact them a few days beforehand to arrange a time.

"If it is a positive result, customers will receive a call from RocDoc to talk about what you will need to do from self-isolation etc," Mr Rock added.

Elsewhere, Minister of State for European Affairs Thomas Byrne has said people arriving into Ireland from a 'red' region will no longer have to self-isolate for 14 days, provided they have a negative COVID test 5 days after arriving into the country.

The change will come into effect after 29 November and it's in accordance with the new EU traffic light travel system.
