Ireland's Covid redzones with one area six times national average as delta variant takes hold

The areas across Ireland with the highest and lowest Covid-19 incidence rates have been revealed for the first time since the Delta variant emerged.

It's estimated that over 70% of new cases are due to the new variant with a race against time to keep the vaccine rollout ahead of it.

Now, we're seeing the effect of this strain in incidence rates across Dublin and the rest of the country.

The national average is currently 121 cases per 100,000 people but that is dwarfed by rates in Dublin and further afield.

In Dublin, west of the city is the hotspot in the capital with Ongar sitting on top of the leaderboard.

The current incidence rate in the west Dublin suburb is 334.9 positive cases per 100,000.

It's closely followed by Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart with an incidence rate of 322.9 per 100,000 people.

Castleknock - which previously had the highest incidence rate in Dublin - now comes in third with an incidence rate of 307.9 cases per 100,000 population.

While those are the highest, there are areas of Dublin with very low rates of Covid-19 cases.

Balbriggan has the lowest incidence rate in the capital with an average of 52 cases per 100,000, followed by Lusk in north county Dublin at 63 per 100,000 and Killiney-Shankill at 73.5 cases per 100,000.

Only five areas have a higher incidence rate than Ongar - They are Letterkenny (369.2), Limerick North City (388.9), Carndonagh (624.9), Dungarvan (770.8) and Buncrana (880.8).
