Ireland's COVID-19 incidence rate surging past countries not on Green List

Ireland’s 14-day coronavirus incidence rate is higher than several countries on the Green List for travel, the latest EU figures have revealed.

Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control shows Ireland’s rate is 29.6 per 100,000, compared to 25.7 in the UK, 23.3 in Poland, 21.6 in Sweden and 17.9 in Germany.

Irish people arriving back from these places are required to self isolate for two weeks.

Spain has the highest 14-day incidence in the countries monitored by the ECDC, at 218.3.

Meanwhile, the Government is set to launch a new nine-month coronavirus plan.

Ireland’s Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn, speaking on the Late Late Show on Friday, said: “We are closing the first chapter of Covid-19 and are now moving into chapter two.

“Absolutely we are still in control of this, and when I say we, I am talking about the Irish people because it is the efforts of the Irish people that keep this, and have kept it, under control.

“It’s no surprise given we’ve opened up and relaxed measures that we’ve seen an increase in cases, but we’ve seen a very slow increase in cases.”
