Ireland's biggest homeless hostel is set to open above a Starbucks in Dublin City Centre.

Avalon House will open on Aungier Street and hopes to be able to cater for 155 people.

The premises in South Dublin is currently a hostel for tourists which is due to shut in the coming weeks.

It will be operated by the Peter McVerry Trust as part of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive's strategy for the winter ahead reports The Irish Times.

But, Dublin City Councillor Mannix Flynn claims that the project had not been consulted with local residents or businesses.

He told the publications: "There's already three facilities within in this area. There's DePaul which is right beside it which basically deals with people who have addiction issues, you have the Salvation Army just on the corner of Aungier Street and you also have a Peter McVerry Trust facility on Aungier Street anyway."
