A foreign ambassador who died in Dublin last month is to be buried in a rural village due to a special link between it and her native country.
Laura Bernal, Argentine Ambassador to Ireland, who passed away on April 26, will be laid to rest in Foxford, Co Mayo on Friday.
The highly respected and "cherished" diplomat had visited the village on several occasions as it was the birthplace of the founder of the Argentine Navy, Admiral William Brown.
Ms Bernal, who was in her 60s, proudly highlighted the links between Ireland and Argentina and was constantly in contact with Foxford's Admiral Brown Society.
A spokesman for the society said: "Ambassador Bernal had a great affection for the people of Foxford and County Mayo and we are and honored that her family have chosen our area as her final resting place.
"May her gentle soul rest in peace."
More than 200 Argentinian military personnel travelled to the village last November, when the tall ship, Libertad, visited Ireland.
The Buenos Aires native laid a wreath at Admiral Brown's statue, describing the occasion as an emotional day for her.
Gardai called to her home in Rathmines after receiving a report she had been found dead.
It is understood there are no suspicious circumstances related to the death.
On Thursday morning, the hearse carrying her coffin received a garda escort from her home in Dublin, to the embassy and onto the N4 as she made her final trip west.
Her funeral mass will be live streamed from St Michael's Church at noon on Friday.
Ms Bernal is to be buried in Craggagh Cemetery after the service.
A post on RIP.ie said: "Ambassador Laura Bernal died peacefully on April 26.
"She was the beloved sister of Araceli, sister-in-law of Luis Maria, aunt of Maria, Clara, Santiago, Victoria and Juan Pablo, esteemed colleague to everyone at the Embassy of Argentina in Ireland and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, and cherished by the Argentine Community in Ireland."
