Ireland's 2022 bank holiday dates and frontrunner for the 'bonus' bank holiday

Now that the new year is officially here, lots of people will be scrambling to plan their holidays for 2022.

As we look to finally move on from Covid, sun-seekers will be searching for the best getaways.

And there's no better time to plan a holiday than around a Bank holiday weekend.

While we could have a bonus extra day off this year, here's a full list of all the confirmed bank holidays in 2022:
- New Year's Day: Monday, January 3
- St. Patrick's Day: Thursday, March 17
- Easter Monday: Monday, April 18
- Early May Bank Holiday: Monday, May 2
- June Bank Holiday: Monday, June 6
- August Bank Holiday: Monday, August 1
- October Bank Holiday: Monday, October 31
- Christmas Day: Sunday, December 25
- St Stephen's Day: Monday, December 26

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar recently revealed we could be in line for a 'double Bank Holiday'.

St Brigid's Day on February 1 originally emerged as the frontrunner of preferred dates for the extra day off.

A campaign backed by the Women's Parliamentary Caucus, the Green Party, Joe Duffy and Imelda May saw thousands of people sign an online petition for the new Bank Holiday to be held on the first day of spring.

However, Mr Varadkar has since said that the special Bank Holiday will not happen on February 1 in 2022.

He did indicate that in future years arrangements could be made for St Brigid's Day to be recognised as a day off.

Instead, it has emerged that there could be a double Bank Holiday around St Patrick's Day next March to recognise the contributions made by key workers during Covid-19.

The Fine Gael leader said that the government is examining whether March 18 could be made a public holiday this year.

This would mean the country would have two days off together as St Patrick's Day on March 17 is already a Bank Holiday.

Such an arrangement would only be in place for 2022, he added, with February 1 the date of the new national holiday from 2023.
