Ireland pub and restaurant reopening: Rules on time limits, substantial meals and table numbers

Ireland's restaurants and gastropubs will finally reopen on Friday with tables countrywide being booked up.

Pubs that serve food with an on-site kitchen as well as the traditional restaurant will be allowed open while "wet pubs" don't make the cut.

Time limits will return in some cases as will the substantial meal rules however there are some changes from the summer.

Here's what to expect if you are going for a meal this weekend or in the month of December.

Level 3 restrictions in full as Ireland prepares to leave strict lockdown

Pub and restaurant rules

Time limit

The hour and 45-minute limit will still apply, although if you're more than 2m apart from the next table you can stay for longer.

Gathering size

It'll be a maximum of six people at a table but unlike the last time around, there's no limit on the number of households that can attend.

Substantial meal rule

The "€9 euro substantial meal" rule that was in place before the current level five lockdown period will still be in place.

Official Government statement

"From Friday 4 December, restaurants and pubs operating as restaurants (serving a substantial meal) can open for indoor dining with additional restrictions, including a requirement for meals to be prepared on site, inside the premises, with a maximum of 6 people per table. This includes access for non-residents to restaurants in hotels."
