Ireland pub and house party rules as gardai prepare for first weekend of phase three

Ireland entered phase three of the opening roadmap on Monday with this weekend the first of the new phase.

The latest easing of restrictions means more people can gather and socialise together while maintaining social distancing rules.

This is likely to herald more house parties and people trying to flock to pubs with gardai prepared for a busy weekend.

While the restrictions have eased they have not gone away - here's the rules and restrictions when it comes to socialising and the potential punishments.

House parties

The Government has not said house parties are allowed and while bigger gatherings are allowed, packing a load of people into one house is unlikely to make social distancing possible.

The official guidance is that "Indoor gatherings of up to 50 people when conducted in line with public health advice are permissible."

Outdoor gatherings of up to 200 people are allowed although the weather forecast suggests not many of these will happen.

The Gardai do not have the power to arrest people for simply having people at their house but can shut it down of it's deemed to be breaching the rules.

A party in Co Waterford last weekend with over 60 teens, which was before we entered phase three, was stopped by gardai but no arrests were made.

A garda spokesperson said in regards the incident: "On arrival, the scene was cleared by the owners of the premises. No offences disclosed."

Pubs

With many people hoping to visit a pub this weekend it is important to know that rules still apply and you may need to book.

Punters will have to buy a substantial meal and cannot stay for over 105 minutes as per guidelines.

An Garda Síochána and the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) have called on all pubs in Dublin to ensure they are following the reopening guidelines.

“Rogue” pubs that disregard the guidelines could receive an objection to their licence when it comes up for renewal, they warned.

The Gardaí will be inspecting licensed premises to ensure public order is maintained - and are ready to intervene if necessary.
