Ireland players urge FAI to give Stephen Kenny new contract now so they can focus on the future

Ireland players want the FAI to end the Stephen Kenny contract saga so they can focus on the future without distraction.

Kenny will get a contract extension for Euro 2024 after satisfying his bosses about the direction the team is going.

The FAI board meets on November 29 to review the World Cup campaign in which Ireland finished a distant third.

That’s when it will be decided whether Kenny to offer Kenny an extension this side of Christmas - or wait until next summer when his current deal expires.

But midfielder Jason Knight - Ireland’s game-change in Luxembourg - wants the matter put to bed.

“I think the whole squad does,” said the Derby County ace. “We can see progression and we want to keep improving with the gaffer as it is.”

Ireland have two home friendlies in March against as yet unknown opposition before four Nations League games in June and two more in September.

Knight added: “I want to see the manager in place. He has been great for me and great for all the lads.

“I know that (decision) is down to other people, but I definitely want to see the manager stay.

“The FAI probably won’t ask me personally but if they do, I’ll say I want the manager to stay.”
