Ireland planning to ease restrictions on UK visitors ahead of holiday season

Restrictions on UK visitors to Ireland could be lifted in the coming weeks as part of the country's relaxation of tough Covid rules.

Although the move will be a much-needed boost for the tourism industry, it is likely to be a couple of months before travel curbs between the countries are lifted.

All UK citizens currently arriving in Ireland from the mainland are required to quarantine for 14 days even though the two countries are part of the Common Travel area.

The Telegraph reported: “Under the Irish government’s plans to kickstart summer travel, it will remove quarantine and tests allowing restriction-free travel between the UK mainland and Ireland.

“Travellers returning to the UK will not face quarantine under the terms of the common travel agreement.”

Travel rules in European countries

It claimed that UK holidaymakers will not be need to complete passenger locator forms or documentation other than passports or driving licences to cross the borders.

Cross border journeys from Northern Ireland to the south have been allowed without restrictions since May 17.

However, it is likely to be July before holidaymakers from the UK will be able to enter the country freely.

Chief executive of Tourism Ireland, Niall Gibbons, told the newspaper: “We know there is significant demand from British and other overseas visitors to return to Ireland as soon as possible.

“We are excited about the news that the government will make an announcement this week regarding summer travel, a move which would not only rekindle the close relations between our countries but also protect thousands of jobs and livelihoods across the travel sector.”

Latest updates for UK visitors to Ireland includes the need for visitors to produce proof of a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before travel.

Currently, there is a legal requirement for all travellers to quarantine on arrival for 14 days - even those who have been fully-vaccinated.
