Ireland passes 25,000 confirmed coronavirus cases

Ireland passed the 25,000 mark for confirmed coronavirus cases this evening.

With a week to go until Phase Two of reopening is hopefully introduced, the total number of cases here increased by 77 on Monday to 25,062 in total since the first case was confirmed in late February.

While 90% of Covid-19 patients have recovered, more than 3,285 people have been hospitalised and sadly 1,650 have died, Dr Tony Holohan said.

Another person's life was claimed by the deadly disease since the last update, according to figures on Monday evening, but the HSPC also denotified three deaths, taking the figure down by two to 1,650.

It's taken us over a month to get from over 20,000 confirmed cases in the Republic to over 25,000.

The last milestone was passed on April 29, with 376 new cases that day.

31 further deaths that day took the death toll then to 1,190.

While we are in a comparably better situation than late April, officials still sounded a warning note as the true test begins following the reopening of the country.

Tonight, Chief Medical Officer Dr Holohan said: “COVID-19 is a new disease, for which we have no vaccine and we have no cure.

“As restrictions ease and we begin to resume social and economic life, we must do all we can to prevent a second wave.

“It is vital that we continue to practice hand and cough hygiene and social distancing, with the additional hygiene measure of face coverings in appropriate settings.

“It is important to give space to our vulnerable people when out and about.

"We must continue to do all we can to interrupt the spread of this virus.”
