Ireland lockdown travel restrictions: The Covid rule Gardai 'will now enforce' after notorious 'large gathering'

Thousands of gardai up and down the country will be manning checkpoints as part of Ireland's Level Five lockdown rules.

Officers will be enforcing the public health measures as part of Operation Fanacht.

And gardai have drawn the public's attention to the current advice to avoid large gatherings, particularly after witnessing a rise in illegal parking at crowded areas.

You can find a list of questions that Gardai will ask you at checkpoints here, and exemptions that allow you to break the Covid travel restrictions here.

A spokesman said: "Public health advice is to avoid crowded areas and amenities. If parking facilities at such locations are closed, do not park illegally as this can hinder access by emergency services.

"An Garda Síochána will be patrolling these locations and will enforce parking regulations."

It comes after gardai issued a stern warning to the public after handing out 17 fixed penalty charges to motorists who travelled more than 5km from their home to visit the Wicklow Mountains last week.

Gardai issued the notices to motorists who they stopped in the Luggala area in Co Wicklow for contravening the 5km travel limit set out by Taoiseach Michael Martin last week as part of Ireland's Level Five restrictions to combat the surge in Covid-19 cases.

Despite only being permitted to travel within 5km of their homes, a number of motorists were caught flouting the rules to visit the Wicklow Uplands on Thursday.

Gardaí had already warned drivers to avoid the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap due to treacherous road conditions due to widespread icy conditions on the roads.
