Ireland lockdown shopping: Christmas opening hours for Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and more

It has been a Christmas like no other in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However one constant throughout the festive season is retail, and this year is no different.

Last night Government leaders confirmed that non-essential retail will be allowed to remain open for the next few days at least, despite further restrictions coming into force.

Here is everything you need to know:

Christmas Day

As usual, for Christmas Day itself almost all stores will stay shut.

St Stephen's Day and beyond

As confirmed by Taoiseach Micheal Martin last night, despite a NPHET recommendation, non-essential retail will be allowed to reopen on St Stephen's Day.

However the Government have insisted the usual festive season sales must be postponed to avoid large queues or a rush of shoppers.

And of course the usual essential retailers that have remained open throughout the pandemic here will again be opening their doors to customers after Christmas.

Here is a breakdown of some of Ireland's most popular stores:

Aldi

Aldi is due to reopen on December 27 from 9am until 9pm.

On New Year’s Eve, the store opens from 9am-7pm and stores will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Aldi is urging customers to check their local store's opening hours on the off-chance they don't tally with the official schedule.

Tesco

While Tesco advises customers to check their local store for precise times, we do know that most larger shops and superstores will be open from 10am to 8pm on St Stephen's Day.

However many smaller Metro stores will be staying shut on December 26.

Lidl

Lidl has asked customers to the opening hours for their particular local Lidl store before they head out shopping.

While Lidl says its opening hours may vary in certain stores, for most the post-Christmas schedule is as follows: 9am to 9pm on December 27 and 28; and 8am until 10pm on December 29 and 30.

Lidl will then close at 6pm on New Year's Eve, and remain closed on New Year's Day.

On January 2, the store opens from 8am until 10pm, while on January 3 it reverts to a 9am to 9pm schedule.

Dunnes Stores

The Dunnes website states that they're currently trading as normal despite the festive season.

Customers can also check online for a breakdown on the timetable of when their local store will open over the festive period.

SuperValu

Supervalu will extend its opening hours over the Christmas period, but the specifics of its schedule are being decided on a store-by-store basis.

Customers should check with their local Supervalu for the exact times.

A spokesperson for the supermarket told Dublin Live: "SuperValu will operate on extended opening hours in the run up to Christmas.

"As SuperValu stores are independently owned and operated customers should check with their local store for exact times."

Marks and Spencer customers should also check the supermarket's website for a full breakdown of when their local store will open over the Christmas.

But store bosses did say that they will be opening with extended hours over the festive period.
