Ireland lockdown: Minister confirms Level 5 restrictions could be extended beyond six weeks or even shortened

Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien has confirmed that the length of the Level 5 lockdown will be under review throughout the six-weeks and could be extended or even shortened depending on its success.

The Fianna Fail, Dublin Fingal TD admitted that six weeks was the "optimum time frame" and is what the Government plans on sticking to but that it will be "under review during the course of [Level 5 restrictions]".

The Minister was speaking ahead of plans today where he is expected to bring forward a memo outlining a ban on evictions for renters during this six-week period.

He said: "We’re doing this to tackle the virus head-on, to suppress its growth so we can open up again in December.

"NPHET has advised us that six weeks is the appropriate length of time. We will be keeping this under review during the course of that.

"It needs to be a sustained period of time and that was discussed at length by myself and my colleagues with the Taoiseach and Tanaiste yesterday at cabinet."

He continued: "That is the optimum timeframe that will lead us to have these measures to take effect.

"We had Level 3 for over 30 days in Dublin. That did have somewhat of a stabilising effect initially but it started to creep back up.

He added: "The measures were really difficult for people. But six weeks is the optimum time frame and that is what we’re planning on."
