A number of other measures aimed at halting the spread of the virus will also be put before Cabinet tomorrow, reports the Irish Examiner.

The proposals will include a number of steps aimed at preventing non-essential travel.

Garda checkpoints will be set up outside airports and fines for non-essential trips will be increased.

The 5km will also be strictly enforced to prevent people from flying.

Passengers who arrive into the country without a negative PCR test face a mandatory hotel quarantine.

There will also be a ban on holiday and short-term visas for travellers coming from South Africa and parts of South America.

From Thursday there will be antigen testing at motorway services near Dublin Port and Rosslare for hauliers travelling to France.

There will also be more questions asked on passenger locator forms and additional follow ups when people arrive into the country.
