Government to meet with Irish pub bosses over Covid-19 rules as warning issued

Government officials are set to meet with representatives from the hospitality on Tuesday to discuss compliance with Covid-19 rules.

They will convene with stakeholders from pubs, restaurants and nightclubs over adherence to coronavirus measures.

Officials from the Department of the Taoiseach have warned in a letter that compliance with rules need to be adhered to if they want to continue operating “at this level of openness.”

Meanwhile, members of the hospitality industry are set to tell the government that hospitality premises that are not enforcing the mandates should be closed.

Hospitality sources that will attend the meeting on Tuesday have said they want inspectors to shut down premises that are not complying with the rules.

A source said: “They need to shut these guys down if they are not complying.

“The guards were inspecting €9 meals last year, they’re not doing anything this year.

“The environmental health officers can walk in and shut a premises down if they see rat droppings, why isn’t it happening if Covid certs aren’t being inspected?

“We’re doing our bloody best and there were no real sanctions for all of this.”

It comes as fresh data provided to the Irish Mirror has revealed that since nightclubs reopened on October 22, 30% of inspections by the HSE on pubs, restaurants and late night clubs found venues were not fully compliant with Covid-19 rules and regulations.

There have also been repeated calls from the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan and Cabinet Ministers for premises to check vaccine passes.

Dr Holohan issued an urgent plea to the public to get themselves vaccinated if the opportunity arises after over 3,000 Covid-19 cases were confirmed by officials for the seventh straight day on Monday.

"We know that vaccination provides our strongest defence against severe illness and hospitalisation," he said."

I encourage anyone who has yet to be vaccinated to come forward for vaccination. It is not too late to become part of our vaccinated pool of people and your participation in the COVID-19 vaccine programme will be welcomed.

‘’We are now also boosting and offering a third vaccine dose to healthcare workers and people over the age of 60. We are beginning to see encouraging signs, in the decreasing levels of infection among those age groups that have received their booster dose.

"The importance of coming forward cannot be overstated. If it is time for your booster, please come forward to receive that booster."
