Ireland keepers Kieran O’Hara and Rob Elliot on hunt for new clubs

Ireland goalkeepers Kieran O’Hara and Rob Elliot are on the hunt for new clubs after being released by Manchester United and Newcastle.

O’Hara, who was capped twice under Mick McCarthy in friendlies, caught the eye on loan at Burton Albion this season.

But the 24-year-old is well down the pecking order at Old Trafford and was among nine players released by the Red Devils today.

The others were Aidan Barlow, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Alex Fojticek, Ethan Hamilton, Dion McGhee, Demetri Mitchell, Largie Ramazani and George Tanner.

"Manchester United would like to thank the departing players for their contributions and wish them the very best of luck for the future,” the club said.

Elliot, 34, will also be a free agent when a nine-year spell with Newcastle draws to a close next week.

One of seven players heading for the exit door, he hasn’t featured for the Magpies since December 2017 and not at all under current boss Steve Bruce.

Elliot won four Ireland caps and was poised to go to Euro 2016 until he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in a friendly against Slovakia three months out.

But he still went as a fan and partied with supporters in Lille the night Robbie Brady floored Italy to secure progression to the knockout stage.

Toon boss Bruce said: "Many of the players leaving us have been with the club for a long time and, both personally and on behalf of the club, I'd like to thank them.

"I'm sure supporters will join me in appreciating their efforts over the years and we wish them the very best with the next steps in their careers."
