Ireland keeper Darren Randolph insists West Ham return was 'too good to turn down'

Darren Randolph insisted he couldn't turn down the offer of a return to West Ham after signing a three and-a-half year deal.

Randolph completed his move back to the Hammers from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee, having joined Boro for €5m in the summer of 2017.

"I had no hesitation in coming back," Randolph said. "This opportunity was simply too good to turn down.

"West Ham is a massive club, with fantastic supporters and an excellent squad of players.

"It's a great challenge for me. I am really looking forward to working with the goalkeepers here and helping the team in any way I can."

The established Ireland netminder will immediately set his sights on Premier League football, with West Ham's first-choice goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski out with a hip injury.

Randolph earned the Player of the Year award for the Championship club last term and made the EFL Sky Bet Championship Team of the Year. He made over 100 appearances for Boro.

But, with Aynsley Pears impressing between the posts when Randolph was out injured, the 32-year-old has decided to take up West Ham's offer of a return to London and the Premier League.

Boro head coach Jonathan Woodgate paid tribute to Randolph, who he was reluctant to lose.

“Darren has been a great player for this football club. He is a terrific professional who wants to play in the Premier League, and this is an opportunity for him.

“We wish Darren the very best of luck for the future.”
