Ireland is now in full Level Five lockdown - what can I actually do?

The country is officially in Level Five for the next month at the very least as Ireland continues to battle a recent surge in Covid-19 cases.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin had no choice but to place the country under harsh restrictions as the coronavirus runs rampant here.

While the country has already experienced similar restrictions in the past, this latest spate will be most similar to the first total lockdown which we experienced back in March.

It's hoped that the new measures will reduce the number of people leaving their homes each day in a bid to curb further spread of the virus.

The new restrictions have seen changes also made to shopping, schools, construction workers and travel.

Here's what you can actually do under Level Five lockdown.

Go for a walk or exercise within 5km

The latest lockdown sees the return of one of the most restrictive measures introduced- the travel limit.

Under currently rules you are permitted to travel within a 5km radius of your home.

This can be for a walk, run or any other exercise or just to get some fresh air.

There's also a very handy website where you can check your 5km radius here.

Shop for essential items

While you can still head to the shops whenever you want, you can only go for essential items such as food.

Given that all other retailers are shut anyway this is no huge change.

However there have been some recent changes to online shopping services as the government has put an end to 'click and collect' services meaning you will not be permitted to collect goods you may order in the coming weeks.

Instead a click and deliver service should be offered by retailers.

Weddings

You are permitted to attend a wedding under Level Five with a maximum of six guests allowed.

Funerals and places of worship

Similarly funerals are permitted to go ahead with a maximum of 10 mourners.

Religious services are also to be held online but places of worship can open for private prayer.

Bars, cafes and restaurants

While all of these have been closed for some time you can still order food and drink for delivery and take away.

However Micheal Martin has said that takeaway pints will no longer be allowed this time around.

No foreign travel

Unsurprisingly all foreign travel is still being advised against by the government apart for essential reasons.

On top of that from 9 January, all passengers arriving at Irish airports and ports whose journey originates in Great Britain or South Africa will be requested to have evidence of a negative result from a pre-departure PCR COVID-19 test taken up to 72 hours prior to arrival in Ireland.
