Ireland is fourth most googled 'quarantine free' holiday destination by Brits despite two week rule

Ireland is the fourth most googled "quarantine free" holiday destination by Brits, according to visa site ESTA.

The website says that of the 75 countries Britain has opened up quarantine free travel too, Ireland comes in at number four.

The travel site looked at Google trends data for the term "travel to (add country)" since the list of destinations was announced earlier this month.

Quarantine free refers to the British rules meaning if you visit Ireland you do not have to quarantine upon returning home.

However, the site does not mention that on the other hand if you visit Ireland from Britain, you will have to quarantine for two weeks.

Searches for "travel to Ireland" in the UK have risen by 223% since the list of countries was revealed earlier this month.

"Travel to Netherlands" is top of the list having risen by 733%, Greece is second with a 488% rise and Czech Republic third with 223% - the same as Ireland.

The travel visa company said: "For Brits, travel restrictions have put a hold on any tourist activity for some time, however, the government’s new quarantine-free destinations announcement does mean that post-lockdown travel is on the rise.

"We explored the top 20 quarantine-free holidays that are being searched for the most, to reveal Britain’s most desirable destinations to visit post-lockdown."

Ireland is one of the 75 countries listed by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office that British people can visit without having to worry about a quarantine upon returning.

However the UK's travel advice does clearly state that any people visiting Ireland will have to follow our quarantine rules.

The UK Government website states: "All arrivals from overseas, including Irish residents, are asked to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

"There are some exemptions, including if you are returning to Ireland from Northern Ireland."
