Ireland international Ronan Curtis fears remainder of English football season will be written off

Ireland international Ronan Curtis fears the remainder of the English season will be written off.

The Portsmouth ace and former Derry City star returned to the League One club last Friday.

He had been given permission to return to his family home in Derry when the coronavirus first hit.

But with English Football League clubs hope to be back on the training ground by May 17, Pompey boss Kenny Jackett wants his players ready.

Clubs, coaches and players throughout the UK are on tenterhooks ahead of a British government update on lockdown measures this Sunday.

But while Curtis is hoping for the best, he doubts that Portsmouth will be back playing games any time soon.

“We’re footballers and want to be doing what we do best, but all you can do is wait,” he said.

“We just have to wait to hear what Boris Johnson says on Sunday with his lockdown speech and plans.

“Personally, I can’t see us going back. We’ve been off almost two months. It’s not getting any shorter, but we still have at least nine league games to play.

“But as footballers we’re worried about this. Look at how many people have died, it’s your health, it's dangerous.

“Of course you should be cautious. Obviously we want it to go away and that can take time, you have to wait.

“We would love to be back playing, but there’s different stuff going about.”

Speaking to Portsmouth’s ‘The News’, the Ireland attacker said player welfare should be the top priority.

“Don’t forget you’re still on the pitch with 11 different people,” he continued.

“You’re going to come across them, put your hands on them. It is dangerous, this virus is in the air and you can catch it.

“I just can't see the season going back.”
