Ireland hits unwanted Covid-19 hospital milestone as Dr Tony Holohan issues 'stark' warning

Over 2,000 people are now in hospitals across Ireland with Covid-19, it has emerged.

The latest figures were confirmed by the HSE this morning.

A total of 2,023 patients are being treated for the deadly virus in the country's hospitals, while 400 are receiving "high grade ventilation".

HSE Chief Paul Reid told the public that their help "counts" as healthcare staff are working to stay in control.

He wrote on Twitter: "2,023 patients are now in hospital with Covid-19. Over 400 are receiving high grade ventillation & respiratory support inside & outside of ICU.

"Our national critical care surge plans are activated.

"Were working really hard to remain in control. Your help counts."

It comes after Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan warned of a "stark" situation in Ireland's hospitals following the confirmation of a further 2,944 new cases yesterday.

He said last night: “The situation in our hospitals is stark. We are seeing people of all ages being admitted to hospital and being taken into intensive care units.

"The levels of infection are such that your chances of transmitting or getting COVID-19 are very high, and we know that a proportion of those cases will lead to serious illness and mortality.

"There is no group who should feel the public health advice does not apply to them. It is only if we act together that we can keep ourselves, our loved ones, and health and social care facilities safe.

“As we look forward to the week ahead, consider your choices and make the right ones. Do not go into work tomorrow if you can work from home. If you are an employer, facilitate remote working for your employees.”
