Ireland heatwave: Met Eireann warning as charts show 'red areas' with temperatures soaring above 30C

Some inland areas of Munster and Leinster could see temperatures in excess of 30C today as Ireland's heatwave continues.

Weather experts are forecasting a scorcher right across the country with southern parts of Ireland getting the very best of it.

Charts show temperatures in inland areas of Ireland highlighted in red as the mercury soars far above the usual average for August.

It will be cooler by the coast but still hitting well into the twenties.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "The last of the mist and fog will clear this morning, leaving a hot, dry and sunny day, with highest temperatures generally between 25 to 30 degrees, possibly reaching the low 30s in a few inland spots. Not as hot near coasts, with sea breezes developing in the afternoon. Winds will be light elsewhere. Fog may linger in a few spots along coastal areas also, mostly in the northwest."

Places like Kilkenny could hit 32C according to Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly.

A status yellow temperature warning for the entire country begins at midday and will last until Sunday, with people asked to be mindful of the heat.

And the next two days will be the last of the incredible spell with the weather expected to break-up from Sunday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Uncertainty increases as we progress through Sunday and into the early days of next week with a slight chance of thunderstorms later on Sunday and into Monday, likely heralding a return to cooler near average temperatures."
