Ireland Green List update as two more countries set to be added

Two more countries are set to be added to Ireland's travel Green List - before the scheme is scrapped next month.

The Government confirmed we are set to sign up to the European Commission's 'traffic light' system in October, but until then the existing Green List will remain in place.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said yesterday that the Government will broadly support the commission's approach on travel going forward.

But until that scheme is enacted, the Green List will see one final revision that will last for the next month.

Travel expert Eoghan Corry confirmed Germany and Poland are the countries that look set to be added, which will be "huge for inbound tourism".

However he added that there is still "very little clarity" from politicians on foreign travel.

He told Newstalk Breakfast: The really good news is that as of Monday, while there is very little clarity, one of the very clear things is that two very important countries are getting on to the Green List. Germany, huge for inbound tourism into Ireland, and Poland, which is very important as 120,000 Poles live in Ireland.

"There's been a huge disconnection of families, and I think a lot of people making the decisions grew up in a very different Ireland. 17% of us are born abroad nowadays, and the dislocation of families.

"I don't think anyone at Government level has any clue as to what's going on with the separation issues there."

The current Green List, which has been in force since August, is as follows:

  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Greece
  • Greenland
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Norway
  • Slovakia
