Ireland Government announcement today: What time will we know if a new Government can be formed? All you need to know

Ireland is set to find out whether the nation will have a new Government this evening.

Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Green Party members have been voting on the Programme for Government, with the results expected later today.

If it passes, Micheal Martin will take up the position of Taoiseach from Saturday until December 2022, when Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar will take charge again.

Here's all you need to know about when we'll find out:

What time will announcement be made?

The counting of Fianna Fail’s 14,000 member votes are currently being counted, with all expectations they will have a majority voting in favour of the Programme for Government.

The Green Party count is expected to start around noon, as is Fine Gael’s count.

A decision is expected to be announced at around 6pm this evening.

When would Micheal Martin become Taoiseach?

In the scenario of the deal passing, from tomorrow, Mr Martin will become Taoiseach until December 2022, before Leo Varadkar resumes the role once again.

Mr Varadkar addressed the nation on Thursday evening in what was likely his last public speech as Taoiseach as he announced Phase 3 of reopening the country would go ahead on Monday, June 29.

Is it possible it won't pass?

Yes.

Green Party members are bitterly divided on signing-up to the new Government.

It has led embattled Green leader, Eamon Ryan, to issue an impassioned plea to his party faithful to vote yes for the deal on Wednesday in a last ditch effort to get it across the line.

He said: “I’m asking members of the Green Party to vote Yes, I respect people on the No side but I am advocating for a Yes.”

Both Mr Ryan and deputy leader, Catherine Martin, who is challenging him for the party leadership, are behind the deal.

A majority of two thirds of party members is needed before Mr Ryan can declare the Greens are entering the coalition.

What happens if it doesn't pass?

This would lead to another period of political uncertainty and could beckon another General Election.
