Ireland fans hail Cristiano Ronaldo for 'lovely gesture' after World Cup qualifier

Fans were full of praise for Cristiano Ronaldo after he gave his jersey to a young supporter following Portugal's 0-0 draw with Ireland on Thursday night.

Shelbourne U13 player Addison Whelan ran onto the Aviva Stadium pitch after the match to greet the Manchester United star, who gave her a hug as well as his jersey.

Having been booed throughout the game by the home supporters, Ronaldo raised a cheer when he handed his Portugal jersey to the young Irish fan.

And plenty of people took to social media to praise the 36-year-old for the "lovely gesture".

One person said: "This little girl invaded the pitch at the end of the #IREVPOR game. She was chased and caught by stewards. #Ronaldo gave her his Jersey and she was embraced by her dad as she was escorted from the pitch. She now has this memory for life. What a class act @Cristiano is."

Another commented: "Fair play to Ronaldo giving his jersey to a young kid who invaded the pitch."

A tweet read: "Fair play to him, lovely gesture."

Someone else said: "Cristiano Ronaldo giving his shirt to an Irish Fan despite the result. Humble and class player."
