Ireland edges towards zero coronavirus patients in ICU amid 90% drop

Ireland is edging towards zero coronavirus cases in intensive care as the number of patients has dropped 90% from the peak.

Health Minister Simon Harris confirmed that there were just 16 people with Covid-19 in ICUs across the country on Saturday morning.

This is a fall from the 160 intensive care patients at the peak of the outbreak here in early April.

Mr Harris praised the public for their cooperation with guidelines, but warned that we need to "stick to advice" as the country continues to reopen.

He wrote on Twitter: "Just 2 months ago there were more than 140 people in ICU in hospitals with #Covid19. Today there are 16.

"This progress was not guaranteed - it is thanks to you & yours efforts & our public health experts & national plan.

"Keep well & stick to advice to ensure we keep moving forward."

While HSE chief Paul Reid added: "Today we are down to 16 Covid-19 cases in ICU. Down from 160 at the peak.

"Let's hope they all make a recovery. There is now great hope as society kickstarts.

"Never had we all so much individual responsibility to see the Nation succeed."
