Ireland defender Derrick Williams poised to join LA Galaxy

Derrick Williams is poised to swap Blackburn Rovers for LA Galaxy.

The Ireland international is currently injured and will miss the start of the Republic's World Cup qualifying campaign against Serbia and Luxembourg this month.

The 28-year-old defender is reported to be in Los Angeles and ready to sign for Robbie Keane's old club, although DC United are also interested.

Williams has three Ireland caps, the last of which coming against New Zealand in a friendly in November 2019 when he came on as a 56th minute substitute.

Stephen Kenny selected him on the bench for the Euro play-off semi-final defeat in Slovakia in August of last year.

But he missed the subsequent UEFA Nations Cup games against Wales and Finland due to Covid, then a thigh muscle injury ruled him out of the encounters with England, Wales and Bulgaria.

At club level, Williams started the season well for Blackburn alongside Darragh Lenihan but the injury forced him to go under the knife in December and he only managed to play 11 games for his club this term.
