Ireland defender Ciaran Clark signs new Newcastle United deal

Ciaran Clark has signed a new two-year contract with Newcastle United.

The Republic of Ireland defender’s deal was due to expire in the summer but had been in talks in recent weeks.

Clark, 31, has been with the Toon since Rafa Benitez signed him in 2016 and has reclaimed a place in the side of late having put injury woe behind him.

He said: "It's a brilliant feeling and I'm delighted that I've managed to get it signed. I'm really looking forward to continuing my years here"

"My contract was ending in the summer and I was trying to stay focused on the games, getting back involved this season and trying to play.

“I managed to do that and to be back playing was the real aim and then the contract has followed.”

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce said: “I'm delighted Ciaran has signed a new deal.

"First and foremost, he’s a very talented defender and he gives us great balance as a naturally left-footed centre-half.

"He has also become a very consistent performer and I'm pleased to see his hard work and commitment rewarded.”
