Ireland cricket match stopped in middle of play due to positive Covid-19 case

An Ireland cricket match had to be suspended in the middle of play today after a player tested positive for Covid-19.

The one-day match between Ireland Wolves against Balgladesh Emerging Team took place at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

Ahead of the fixture both squads returned negative results, allowing the match to get underway.

But a local laboratory reviewed the test results later in the morning and found one of the Ireland players was positive for the virus.

The game was immediately suspended, with the Irish player in question immediately isolated.

Bangladesh had batted first and were 122 for four after 30 overs when the game came to a halt.

A statement from Cricket Ireland said: "Today's match between Bangladesh Emerging and Ireland Wolves has been suspended on medical advice.

"Prior to today’s game, both squads received negative results for Covid, and the game proceeded as per protocols. However, a review of results by mid-morning by the local laboratory detected one positive test in the Ireland Wolves squad.

"Play was suspended and the player was immediately isolated ahead of a further test today."
