Ireland Covid vaccine: All the age groups that can expect to get their jab in the next six weeks

Ireland will today learn if NIAC allows the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to be used in those aged under 60.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) this week said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks of unusual blood clotting events as a very rare side effect.

If the single-shot jab does get the green light, the country's rollout will be ramped up with aims to meet the 80% target by June.

In recent days the HSE has released details of when everyone who is getting the jab in the next six weeks can expect to receive the call.

Here's what we learned about when each cohort will get a second dose:

People aged 65 or older and are residents of long-term care facilities

These were the first people to be given the vaccine back in December, and the administration of second doses to this cohort is ongoing.

Population estimate from HSE: 105,000

First dose : Commenced

Second dose : Commenced

Frontline healthcare workers

This cohort was jabbed at the same time as those in cohort one for obvious reasons.

So far, 347,313 doses have been administered to those in this group.

251,577 of these were first doses, with 95,736 second doses.

These vaccinations are ongoing, with thousands more set to be administered this week.

Population estimate from HSE : 250,000

First dose : Commenced

Second dose : Commenced

People aged 70 or older

The bulk of vaccines so far have been given to these people.

The vast majority of those aged over 70 will have received their first dose by the end of next week, according to the HSE.

Population estimate from HSE: 482,327

First dose: Commenced

Second dose : Commenced

People aged 18-69 with medical conditions which put them at a very high risk of severe disease

Vaccinations for this group got underway at the start of the month, with a small number since then receiving a second dose.

Population estimate from HSE : circa 250,000

First dose : Commenced

Second dose : Commenced

All aged between 60-69 years

The most recent group to have begun getting vaccinated, the HSE are hopeful that people in this cohort will start receiving second doses by the start of August

Population estimate from HSE: 417,000

First dose : Commenced

Second dose: End of July

All aged 59 and under that are key workers to the vaccination programme

This is by far the smallest cohort, with the space between dose 1 and dose 2 being less than a month if all goes to plan

Population estimate from HSE : 1,000

First dose : Early May

Second dose : Early June

All aged 16 to 59 with medical conditions that put them at high risk of severe Covid-19

In order to keep the government's plan for four in every five adults to have been offered a vaccine by the end of June, it seems that this cohort will be vaccinated alongside the one above.

Population estimate from HSE: circa 350,000

First dose : Early May

Second dose : Early June
