Ireland could play England in Aviva Stadium friendly as FAI mull over centenary celebrations

The FAI has not ruled out seeking to play England to celebrate its centenary season with a prestige friendly at The Aviva next March.

The association was formed in 1921 as a breakaway football body from the Belfast-based Irish Football Association in the wake of a series of disputes involving senior club matches and the selection of players for the all-island senior team.

It had been hoped to stage a series of events throughout 2021 to mark the historic occasion but the impact of Covid-19 has delayed this.

Instead, the association will honour its formation during the 2021-22 season with a programme of matches and other high-profile exhibitions around the country.

Centre piece of the celebrations will be a senior international friendly in Dublin next March — if Ireland are not involved in a World Cup play-off.

The FAI is anxious to attract one of Europe’s top teams for the historic match.

Recently crowned Euro 2020 champions Italy, World Cup holders France, Germany and Spain are amongst the potential opposition.

But England are also in the frame, with all five nations expected to automatically qualify for Qatar and be available.
