Ireland coronavirus updates: Two deaths and 14 new cases of Covid-19 announced

There have been two new deaths and 14 new cases of coronavirus reported in Ireland.

It brings the total number of confirmed cases to 25,683 while the death toll stands at 1,748.

The Department of Health released the latest figures this evening.

One confirmed case has been denotified, resulting in the total number of 25,683.

It comes as face masks and coverings are likely to become mandatory in shops and indoor spaces across Ireland, it has been reported.

Current coronavirus legislation is in force for buses and trains requiring passengers to wear some form of face covering.

It has now been proposed that this be extended to cover shops and other indoor spaces, RTE reports.

Cabinet Ministers have been meeting on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the new proposals.

The current punishments for failing to wear a mask or covering on public transport are a fine of up to €2,500 or six months in prison.
