Ireland captain Seamus Coleman in angry clash with Liverpool fans after Everton's Merseyside derby loss

Everton and Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman was involved in an angry altercation with Liverpool fans after the Merseyside derby on Sunday, the Mirror reports .

Everton were humiliated by their rivals at Anfield as a youthful Liverpool side progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Curtis Jones scored a stunning second-half winner as Everton's woeful record in the derby continued, with their last win coming way back in 2010.

Everton's players were criticised for not going over to their fans at full time as all but Djibril Sidibe immediately made their way down the tunnel.

Footage has emerged of Coleman and fellow defender Mason Holgate involved in a verbal exchange with home fans.

Toffees captain Coleman is seen repeatedly asking "what did you say?" while Holgate is restrained by goalkeeper coach Alan Kelly.

Holgate, who was involved in a bust-up with Roberto Firmino at Anfield last season, reacts angrily to the taunts before the pair are ushered down the tunnel by a steward.

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson addressed the failure to go over to the travelling support as he apologised for the latest dismal derby performance.

“I think everyone is totally disappointed. I think the players are all different people in how they deal with the loss. It's one of those things," he said.

“Yeah, of course usually more players go to the fans. It's not the kind of thing for the team not to do and I am sure in the future there will be more players going towards them.”

Everton return to Premier League action against Brighton on Saturday with Carlo Ancelotti's men in 11th in the table.

Mirror Sport has contacted Everton for comment on the footage.
