Ireland boss Joe Schmidt not ruling out any of his squad for Japan clash

Joe Schmidt isn't ruling any of his 31-man squad out of the selection equation for Saturday's World Cup meeting with hosts Japan.

It was confirmed this morning in Yokohama that Johnny Sexton took a bang on his thigh around the 20 minute mark in yesterday's important opening pool win over Scotland.

Sexton stopped place kicking after 26 minutes but an IRFU spokesperson said today that both he and Conor Murray's 58th minute substitutions were tactical.

"Johnny felt a bit awareness of it, but was removed tactically after that fourth try," he said.

With Joey Carbery ready to go after undergoing a minor ankle operation early last month, Sexton may be wrapped in cotton wool in the coming weeks and used more sparingly against Japan, Russia and Samoa - with Ireland eyeing a big quarter-final clash with South Africa.

Rob Kearney and Keith Earls are also expected to get their first run out of the tournament against the Brave Blossoms, but it seems the game has come to early for Robbie Henshaw after his hamstring problem.

“Rob Kearney, Joey and Keith Earls are all fully fit, and will train fully this week," added the spokesperson.

"Robbie is running well and his rehab is accelerating so we are pretty hopeful for him as well - hopeful that he will be back in to more organised training this week.”

After failing their initial HIA tests during yesterday's 27-3 win, Peter O'Mahony and Bundee Aki both passed HIA 2.

If they pass the third and final assessment later today, they will be allowed to resume full training tomorrow ahead of the Shizuoka clash.

However Joe Schmidt will shuffle the deck to some extent in terms of game management so there will be a number of changes.

Josh van der Flier sustained a cut over his eye in the four-try victory and suffered cramp, but he is OK, while Tadhg Furlong received some "running repairs" but wasn't injured when he was replaced.
