Ireland blue jersey receives rave reviews as Stephen Kenny's side beat Qatar

Republic of Ireland fans sounded more like Dublin supporters on Tuesday night as they cheered on the Boys in Blue.

Stephen Kenny's side were wearing blue jerseys as the Football Association of Ireland celebrated its centenary.

In a once-off deviation from the usual green kit, the FAI commemorated 100 years of existence with the limited edition jersey, sporting the blue colour which the football body first used after its establishment in 1921.

The crest on the jersey bears a green shamrock in a white background, with the year 1921 printed onto its collar.

The jersey has been a hit with fans, expecially with Ireland winning the game against Qatar 4-0.

One supporter tweeted: "The blue Ireland jersey is beautiful tbh."

Another commented: "Ireland playing like they are Italy in the blue jersey. Think we should wear this jersey all the time."

Someone else said: "So it's starting to look like it was the green jerseys holding Ireland back. Put them in blue and they think they're Brazil."

Another post read: "I do like the blue Ireland jersey."

It took Ireland just four minutes to force their way in front, and again it was Callum Robinson, who scored twice in Baku, who did the trick.

The West Brom striker exchanged passes with McGrath and Hourihane to work his way in from the left and then unleashed a shot which clipped defender Bassam Hisham Alrawi and looped over keeper Meshaal Barsham and into the net.

Qatar’s night took a further turn for the worse with just 13 minuets gone when, after McGrath had been tripped by Karim Boudiaf inside the box, referee Keith Kennedy pointed to the spot.

Robinson made a beeline for the ball and sent Barsham the wrong way from the resulting penalty.

Robinson completed his hat-trick eight minutes into the second-half when he ran on to Jeff Hendrick’s through-ball and slotted past Barsham to make it 3-0.

The fourth goal arrived six minutes later when defender Shane Duffy climbed highest to power a header home from Hourihane’s corner.
