Republic of Ireland and Brighton star Aaron Connolly deleted his Twitter account after receiving abusive messages following Sunday night's clash with Tottenham.
Brighton won the game 1-0 but The Athletic reports that the 21-year-old was attacked on social media for missing a goal chance.
The vitriol came after Connolly had a shot blocked by Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld late in the game, with Brighton already in the lead at that stage.
A bulk of the criticism was reported to have come from punters who had staked money on the result of the Premier League clash.
It was also reported that Connolly took a call from a club staff member who checked on the Galway man's wellbeing following the vile abuse.
Connolly has netted twice so far this season and recently returned to action following a hamstring injury he picked up after scoring in a 3-3 draw with Wolves last month.
Brighton boss Graham Potter recently backed the young attacker to kick on in the remainder of the Premier League season.
Potter said: "He has got some really good attributes, he is exciting and we believe in him but at the same time he is young and learning to be a Premier League player, a Premier League goalscorer.
"He has been a little bit unlucky with injuries and one or two things but that is part of life as a footballer."
Brighton lie 17th in the Premier League table following Sunday's win and host Liverpool at the Amex on Wednesday night.
