Ireland among Six Nations sides set for eight-team tournament at end of year

Ireland are set to join the five other Six Nations sides in an eight-team tournament replacing the traditional autumn internationals at the end of the year.

The new tournament will begin on November 14, two weeks after the conclusion of the 2020 Six Nations following its suspension due to coronavirus, and will finish up on December 5.

Full details of the tournament are yet to be confirmed but it is reported that Ireland will take on Wales, Fiji and England in one group, while Scotland, Japan, France and Italy will make up the other group in the competition.

Teams are likely play-off against the corresponding-ranked side in the other pool, with each group winner meeting in a final at Twickenham.

World Rugby have earmarked the period between October 24 and December 5 as a 'temporary international window' and confirmation is expected on Thursday that Ireland will restart their Six Nations bid against Italy on October 24.

Ireland will then travel to France for the final game of the Six Nations on October 31.

Andy Farrell's side had been due to welcome Australia, South Africa and Japan to the Aviva Stadium in this year's autumn tests before Covid-19 scuppered those plans.

The schedule and venues for the new eight-team tournament have yet to be officially revealed and it remains to be seen if fans will be allowed to attend fixtures.
