The study compiled the list by adding up all the costs associated with learning how to drive and finding out what percentage of a person’s wages it adds up to.

Car Insurance Expert at Confused Alex Kindred said: “Learning to drive is a new and exciting experience but getting your licence can also be stressful and expensive.

“The key to keeping costs low is to prepare yourself as much as possible and secure that freedom in as few lessons or attempts as possible.”

The most affordable country to learn how to drive was Malta followed by Poland and Portugal were the cost of getting on the road represented a fraction of their salary at 5.40%, 6.38% and 6.90% respectively.

British drivers were also able to get their license cheaper than those in Ireland.

UK motorists only had to fork out €1,577.95 which represented 6.98% of their wages.

Whereas those in Poland had to pay €525.45 but there the average wage in the country is €8229.69 representing 6.38% of their wages.
