Ireland AM star Karen Koster reveals exhaustion makes her 'defensive' with husband John Maguire

TV star Karen Koster told how exhaustion has made her defensive with her husband John Maguire.

The Ireland Am host gets up at 5am to co-present the Virgin Media One flagship show and explained how she strives to not let tiredness not get the better of her.

Karen said: “I have to watch that exhaustion doesn’t get the better of me because I find that I can get a bit defensive.

“I have tried to dial that down a notch because I can be working with a low level of fuel in the tank.

"A lot of parents will say that if you have a late night or a hangover, that can hit you.”

The Dublin native admitted that her co-host Mark Cagney suffered with seasonal affective disorder and she explained how some days can be tougher than others.

Speaking to RSVP Magazine, the 38-year old said: “Mark actually told us before that he suffered from SAD and started crying on set once because his body clock was all over the place.

“It is really the tiredness that affects me, especially as a new mum, but I am kind of good at handling that.

“I totally get what Mark said, some days you are just tethering and something that shouldn’t upset you actually does.

“Your three-year-old not putting his shoes on sets you off and you are the one having a tantrum. I am really aware of not saying how tired I am because that gets boring.

“Thankfully Eve sleeps through the night and she has done since I started.”

The mother-of-three said juggling home life and her dream TV job can be tricky but an early bedtime routine is keeping her sane.

She explained: “The jobs is definitely a challenge because the content is different, obviously.

“It is more the lifestyle changes that go along with the job and you forget that you have homework every evening and I try to get to bed before John.

“I am also extra tired during the day, I think I am grand and then it hits me about three o’clock and that is the time I am collecting the kids.

“I try to be asleep by 10pm, which isn’t crazy really. A lot of mums would be lucky to have a sleep from 10pm to 5am.

“I was getting up at 4.30am for the first couple of weeks, but I couldn’t sustain that and I really had to wave the white flag.

"Getting up that half an hour later at 5am feels more like morning than the middle of the night.”
