Ireland AM's Alan Hughes shares emotional hug with Mark Cagney as he leaves show

Alan Hughes has shared an emotional picture of him embracing Mark Cagney after he signed off from Ireland AM for the final time.

Wednesday's instalment of the Virgin Media breakfast show was a tearjerker as Mark Cagney stepped down from his anchor role after 20 years on air.

While it was a tough day for all of those working on Ireland AM, Alan was particularly emotional as he has been by Mark's side all this time, RSVP Live reports.

Alan took to Instagram on Thursday evening to share a candid photo of the presenting pair hugging, writing: "Sad, emotional but a fitting goodbye to my on screen husband Mark Cagney on @irelandamvmtv yesterday we have worked together on the show for 20 years he is a true gent and a great friend I will miss him so much."

Alan's followers admired the picture, with many of them commenting on his friendship with Mark and how they will miss him on their screens in the morning.

But it wasn't only on social media that Alan had some touching words for the much-loved broadcaster - on Wednesday he told viewers at home: "We haven't had a cross word in twenty years. I'm so privileged to have worked with you.

"We've been through marriages, deaths everything and we've been together and it's been an amazing twenty years and I'm going to miss you terribly. We are friends for life."

Mark also talked about his on-screen relationship with the Dublin presenter and how he only slags him because he "loves" him.

He said:"I set you up which is done with affection, it's never ever intentional because you wouldn't do that to someone you love.

Weekend AM star Simon Delaney is temporarily filling in for Mark until a replacement is confirmed by Virgin Media.
