Ireland AM presenter Ciara Doherty devastated after death of her beloved dog Alfie

Ireland AM star Ciara Doherty has been left devastated after the death of her beloved dog Alfie.

Taking to Instagram, the presenter shared a poignant photo of her pooch, saying she "couldn't believe" how sad she was.

Donegal native Ciara wrote: "Had to say goodbye to our gorgeous Alfie today and can’t believe how sad I am to see him go.

"He was one of a kind. Sleep tight Alf, thanks for all the cuddles xx".

Ciara's followers shared their sympathies, with many remarking how tough the loss of a much-loved pet can be.

One wrote: "Rest in peace Alfie. Sincere condolences. They are part of the family and it's heartbreaking when they pass."

Another offered her condolences, saying: "I am so sorry. It is heartbreaking to lose such a special member of the family, I've been through it three times... run free Alfie x".

Ciara, who welcomed her first child with husband Richard Stern in February, also opened up about her heartbreak at leaving her daughter Renee to head back to work full time.

She told RSVP magazine: “It was incredibly difficult, I suspected it would be a wrench and it was.

“I was heartbroken the day before at the idea of not being with Renee 24/7 and the idea of not being able to give her all of myself, that’s not possible when you have a busy full-time job.

“I felt like I was in a happy, safe bubble when I was on maternity leave and then suddenly I was trying to juggle a full-time job and family life."
