Ireland absentees: Covid-19 and injuries rule out unlucky 13 for relegation decider

Of Stephen Kenny's initial 26-man Republic of Ireland squad for the international triple-header, only half remain.

The new manager has endured a torrid time on and off the pitch since taking charge and faces a relegation-deciding Nations League clash with Bulgaria tomorrow night without 13 of his chosen panel.

Frontline stars Matt Doherty and James McClean were the latest Irish players to test positive for Covid-19 yesterday with Kenny forced to call up a host of replacements.

Injuries and suspensions have also played their part to leave Kenny's hand severely weakened as he desperately searches for a result.

Ireland need just a draw to stay in League B of the Nations League but they are currently in the midst of an unprecedented goalscoring drought, having gone nine and a half hours without a goal now.

The backroom team has been affected also with goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly deciding to avoid the trip to Dublin this week due to his concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
