Iraqi President Barham Salih stressed on Sunday the importance of holding elections as scheduled in a safe and stable environment.

This came during his meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) electoral support team, and the Prime Minister's Advisor for the affairs of the elections, Hussein al-Hindawi.

The Media office of the Iraqi Presidency said Salih and the officials went over the operational and the temporal schedule of the elections.

They also highlighted the expedition of biometric registration of voters and the role of UNAMI in the electoral observation and their contribution to establishing fair and just elections.

"There is a dire need for providing a safe and stable environment, ensuring the adequacy of the procedures envisaged to hold the election," said Salih.

He also emphasized the need to adopt the biometric ID, saying it was essential "to provide the voter the opportunity to choose their candidates away from manipulation and fraud, and the candidates equal chances to nominate and participate."

"These factors are the cornerstone of the elections' success and moving forward towards the desired reform."
