Iraqi Parliamentary Committee Criticizes Government’s Performance

Iraqi government achievements do not exceed 36 percent, the parliamentary committee to monitor the government program and strategic planning has announced.

Speaking at a press conference in Baghdad on Thursday, MP and committee member Mohammed Shayyaa al-Sudani said that most of the clauses in the government’s program were a copycat of previous programs.

The committee indicated that the government had short-lived goals with no direct impact on citizens. In addition, it announced that claims on the full success of the Defense Ministry in implementing its projects are not true, especially that it was without a minister.

The government’s report on such matters is not transparent, stressed the committee.

It pointed to the absence of a full strategic vision in the implementation of the program, saying the government did not commit to issuing bi-monthly reports on its achievements as it had pledged.

The committee pointed out that citizens’ economic and social rights were disregarded by the government's program, which did not develop any scientific or tangible solutions to many problems, and did not include a mechanism on dealing with foreign forces in Iraq.

The committee issued a set of recommendations, mainly reviewing the program and calling for a coordination between the parliament and ministries to implement the projects.

MP and committee member Aras Habib Karim informed Asharq Al-Awsat that as a committee tasked with monitoring the government’s performance, it must follow up every detail of its activities.

Karim stressed that the parliament’s responsibility has doubled ever since it granted the government its confidence.

Salah al-Arbawi, a member of the National Wisdom Movement politburo, stated that the committee’s report is similar to that prepared by the Movement on the government’s performance.

He told Asharq Al-Awsat that despite good indicators in the parliamentary report, the Movement believes the report issued by the opposition is more credible than that of the government.

On Thursday, National Wisdom announced that it assigned a specialized technical committee of the Movement’s members and independent experts to prepare a study on the government's report.

It concluded that the government achieved 79 percent of the ministries’ targets, adding that the government’s achievements do not exceed 32 percent because of lack of full transparency in the program.
