Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has received a phone call from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Abdul Mahdi's office said in a brief statement on Monday.

Iraq denied on Sunday that its territory had been used to carry out attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.

Pompeo has told Abdul Mahdi "the information they have confirms the Iraqi government's statement that its territory was not used to carry out this attack," the Iraqi government said.

"The prime minister stressed that Iraq's duty was to safeguard its own security and stability, to avoid any escalation, and to prevent its territory being used against any neighbouring, brotherly, or friendly country," his office said.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Washington was “locked and loaded” for a potential response to the attack on Saudi Aramco’s oil facilities.

Pompeo has pointed the finger squarely at Tehran.
