Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto discussed in Baghdad on Tuesday strengthening their bilateral relations and security and political cooperation.

Sudani praised Italy's role in combating terrorism and the ISIS extremist group through the US-led international coalition and in training Iraqi security forces within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) mission.

The PM underscored the distinguished relationship between Iraq and Italy, through bilateral cooperation in various fields, stressing Iraq's keenness to develop these ties to serve common interests and regional and international security.

“Iraq and Italy have significant potential for cooperation in several areas, such as health, education, industry, and water resource management, and highlighted the prospect of entering into industrial and economic partnerships,” noted Sudani.

He confirmed that a high-level Iraqi delegation will soon visit Italy to discuss cooperation mechanisms between their countries.

The Italian minister had arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday to discuss security cooperation with officials.

He met with his Iraqi counterpart Thabet Muhammad Saeed Al-Abbasi.

A statement by the Defense Ministry said the officials discussed ways to develop relations and cooperation between Iraq and Italy.
