The Iraqi Health Ministry announced Thursday 4,611 new cases of the novel coronavirus, saying 4,059 recoveries and 22 deaths were also recorded.
The Ministry said the number of people who have received coronavirus vaccines has reached 573,659.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Education spokesman Haider Farooq told the Iraqi news agency, ina, the academic year will not be extended.
“Students must be encouraged to continue their studies amid these exceptional circumstances,” he said.
The spokesperson was responding to some reports saying the academic year in Iraq has ended.
“We are continuing e-learning so that students study well,” Farooq said.
He called on "all students not to waist this opportunity … despite all the difficulties they are facing."
Early this month, Iraq imposed a 10-day lockdown as the country experienced a surge in coronavirus infections.
From May 12 till May 22, mass gatherings were prohibited and malls, cafes, cinemas, parks, event halls, swimming pools and gymnasiums remained closed.
Also, the Ministry had halted in-person learning at schools and universities.
