Iranian women to enter football stadiums for first time in 40 years

Iranian women will be granted access to a football stadium for the first time in 40 years following threats from Fifa to ban its national team over its male-only spectator policy.

The decision comes after the death of Sahar Khodayari, a female fan who set herself on fire rather than go to prison for dressing as a man to attend football matches.

The 29-year-old's death ignited an international outcry.

She was known as the "Blue Girl" on social media after the colours of the football team she supported, Esteghlal.

The first batch of women's tickets to the Islamic Republic's 2022 World Cup qualifier at Tehran's Azadi stadium, due to take place on Thursday, sold out in under an hour, and additional seats also went quickly.

Women have rarely had access to football stadiums since the 1979 revolution.

In October of this year 100 Iranian women were allowed to attend a friendly against Bolivia.

However, the day after the match Iran's prosecutor general warned that it would "lead to sin" and stated that there would not be a repeat.
