Iranian official mocks Donald Trump by posting flag on Twitter after missile attack

Former Foreign Minister Saeed Jalili posted the flag to his Twitter account (Picture: Twitter)

An Iranian official appeared to mock Donald Trump hours after his country carried out a series of missile attacks on US bases

Former foreign minister Saeed Jalili tweeted an image of an Iranian flag in an apparent reference to when Mr Trump posted a low resolution American flag after ordering the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.

Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad airport last week.

Jalili, whose full title is representative of the Supreme Leader to the Secretary of Supreme National Security Council, is also a former negotiator in the Iran-US nuclear deal which has been ripped up by the US president.

Hours earlier Iran launched 22 ballistic missiles towards two Iraqi air force bases hosting United States and coalition forces.

Iran fired the missiles from within their territory at the Ain Asad air base and another facility in Erbil, Iraq, at 1.30am local time (10.30pm GMT).

Iranian state TV said the strikes were in revenge over the US killing last week of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. US authorities said casualties were 'few, if any'.

President Donald Trump responded by tweeting: "All is well!"

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is reportedly overseeing Iranian military actions from the operating room.
